Study of Public Speaking

The Public Speaking program is designed to introduce principles of communication and the classical roots from which they were derived. In class, students prepare and present speeches in both formal platform settings and informal group discussions. While attention will be given to extemporaneous delivery, the emphasis of the coursework is on behind-the-scenes preparation: organizing ideas, structuring messages, and adapting messages for specific audiences. Students who experience anxiety in public speaking situations are particularly encouraged to take a class. Learn more about taking a Performing Arts Minor in Public Speaking.

Through studying the art of public speaking, we hone three essential skills. First, we learn ways to connect quickly and powerfully with any group, often through the use of humor and personal storytelling. Second, we learn to offer our ideas clearly, organizing in ways that help listeners remember what we have said and why it is important. And third, we learn how to cultivate creative communities through the exchange of positive energy, deeper understanding, and greater feelings of empathy.
