Appalachian Nightingale

Appalachian Nightingale is a sophisticated, aesthetically daring and challenging work set in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, where the pressures of poverty and gender inequality play out in a contemporary re-staging of the Philomena myth. Developed in Georgetown University’s Hope Playwriting Seminar, taught by Christine Evans.

Poetry & Verse at Václav Havel’s Place

The Embassy of the Czech Republic and Georgetown University will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the birth of former Czech President Václav Havel, with special guest former First Lady Dagmar Havlová. For the ceremony, Georgetown students will present original works. The winner of the essay contest “The Salvation of This Human World,” inspired by a landmark speech given by Havel and focused on the theme of the current migration crisis in Europe, will also be announced.

Dreams Deferred: Crossing Continents and Cultures with A Raisin in the Sun

Celebrate World Theatre Day with performances from South Africa, Sweden, and the US of an American Classic. Dreams Deferred embodies the resonance of the 1959 Broadway play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry in three different cultural contexts – South Africa, Sweden, and the United States – as well as the larger cross-current themes of racial equality and justice, the Civil Rights Movement and Apartheid.

A hilarious comedy by the highly acclaimed Venezuelan playwright Gustavo Ott! Divorcees, Evangelicals, and Vegetarians brings together three women, each with a distinct and hyperbolic personality—Gloria, the outrageous egotist; Beatriz, the suicidally depressed divorcee; and Meche, the hyper-religious spiritist. However, none of these women is what she seems. Each hides a potentially devastating secret, and it is only through the help and support of the group that each avoids a crisis. A fast-moving, upbeat celebration of sisterhood!
