This past fall, the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) sought to deconstruct the binary between real and virtual. Professor Van Tran Nguyen was featured in a keynote roundtable at the ATHE 2025 Annual Conference. The roundtable, “Beyond Binary: Reframing “The Real” in Contemporary Theatre and Performance,” invited leading scholar-artists such as Professor Tran Nguyen, to discuss how our world’s increasingly blurred lines between virtual and actual have affected portrayals of “the real” in theatrical performance.

Professor Tran Nguyen highlighted that her creative research is guided and ignited by the “integration of media studies and performance studies.” A creator of digital media herself, she had a unique perspective to offer on the usage of green screen technology in modern performance. She highlighted that the green screen is not just a technological element of performance, but may be used as a “metaphor for diasporic subjectivity,” expressing through technology the scattering of a people from their homeland.
