GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY MUSIC PROGRAM
Performing Social Justice in the Age of Modern Media:
Conference & Master Class with Wayne Kramer and Jail Guitar Doors

Find a detailed schedule of the Conference

Every year the Music Program at Georgetown hosts the Future of Music Policy Summit, a national event that pulls in 300+ top performers, lawyers, politicians, and policy advocates working in connection with the music/media industry. This year, the annual program is being expanded with a one-day conference/masterclass designed for Georgetown students. The morning session (10 a.m.-12 p.m.), organized by Prof. Benjamin Harbert and Associate Dean Bernie Cook, will feature presentations by four music/film scholars whose research has broken new ground in the integration of fieldwork, pedagogy and issues of social justice/public policy. The afternoon session (1:30-4 p.m.) will begin with a keynote address by legendary guitarist and songwriter Wayne Kramer, co-founder of Jail Guitar Doors USA, a non-profit organization that brings musical instruments and education to the prison population, followed by a two-hour guitar masterclass led by Kramer and two additional members of Jail Guitar Doors USA. This masterclass has been designed to engage Georgetown students in a variety of issues, from performance techniques and pedagogical approaches to teaching in prisons to the role of media in current public policy debates and the current state of arts education. The day will conclude with a 45-minute round-table discussion featuring the day’s academic speakers and Jail Guitar Doors USA representatives. Georgetown College also featured the Future of Music Summit and the Conference in a recent article.

Future of Music Summit
The Music Program at Georgetown University is proud to co-host, once again, the Future of Music Summit. It’s no secret that for musicians, the world is moving faster than ever. Revenue streams continue to shift, with new distribution platforms growing in popularity, even as questions persist about sustainability. And as Congress looks poised to consider a comprehensive update to our nation’s copyright laws, it’s never been more important for the music community to get engaged. As the only national conference that focuses on the connections between musicians and fans, policymakers and academics, legal experts and technologists, media professionals and entrepreneurs, the 2013 Future of Music Summit will be tackling all these issues and more.
