Georgetown alumnus Mike Birbiglia returns to campus with latest Off-Broadway hit, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend: Unplugged

Washington, DC – Georgetown University alumnus and acclaimed comedian, writer, and actor Mike Birbiglia returns to his alma mater with an unplugged version of his latest Off-Broadway hit, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, running for five shows only Monday through Friday, February 25-March 1 at 8 p.m. in the Davis Performing Arts Center’s Gonda Theatre.

In the show, which the New York Times called “ridiculously enjoyable,” Mike shares a lifetime of romantic blunders and miscues that most adults would spend a lifetime trying to forget. On this painfully honest journey, Birbiglia struggles to find reason in an area where it may be impossible to find — love.

My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend opened Off-Broadway at the Barrow Street Theatre in New York City on March 18, 2011. It won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show and was named a “Critics’ Pick” by the New York Times, New York Magazine, and Time Out New York. Time magazine called the show’s finale “possibly the best 15-minute stretch of playwriting… all season.”

Birbiglia is best known for his 2009 Off-Broadway hit show Sleepwalk With Me, which won the Nightlife Award and was nominated for Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle awards. In 2011, Birbiglia directed and starred in a feature film adaptation of Sleepwalk With Me, which won the 2012 NEXT audience award at the Sundance Film Festival.

An English major who graduated in 2000, Birbiglia was a member of the Georgetown Players Improv Troupe for four years, and won the “Funniest Person on Campus” competition his sophomore year, earning the chance to perform at the D.C. Improv.

Birbiglia has starred in three Comedy Central Specials and released three hit CDs for Comedy Central Records — Two Drink Mike; My Secret Public Journal Live, which was named one of the “Best Comedy Albums of the Decade” by The Onion AV Club; and Sleepwalk With Me Live, which debuted at #1 in Billboard Magazine. Birbiglia has also made regular appearances on Public Radio International’s This American Life. His literary debut, Sleepwalk With Me And Other Painfully True Stories, was published by Simon & Schuster in October 2010 and became a New York Times bestseller. Amazon.com named the book one of their Top 10 Entertainment Books of the year, alongside titles by Jay-Z, Stephen Sondheim and David Rakoff.

Prof. Derek Goldman, artistic director of the Davis Performing Arts Center, says, “As ardent fans of Mike Birbiglia’s work (it has even been on the curriculum in our comedy courses!), we are thrilled and honored to welcome this celebrated Georgetown alum back to his alma mater for this special residency.”

Tickets to My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend: Unplugged are $30 general, $20 for Georgetown faculty/staff, and $15 for Georgetown students.
