Academics
The Department of Performing Arts offers undergraduate majors (32–35 credits) and minors (19–20 credits). Both are designed to expose students to the range of perspectives that make up the study of the performing arts: praxis, historical and theoretical perspectives, embodiment, ethnographic study, media studies, creative research, artistic production, and, of course, performance. The department’s two distinctive interdisciplinary majors (American Musical Cultures and Theater and Performance Studies) also understand writing as integral to exploring the relationship between performance, culture, and society. Students in major programs may finish their studies by undertaking a thesis or capstone project, which can be either scholarly or creative in form. Those who wish to apply to major in American Musical Cultures or Theater and Performance Studies may declare at any time during the year.
