As part of his February 6-7, 2014 residency, the Georgetown University Music Program welcomed critically acclaimed composer/drummer/clinician participates for three exciting events in McNeir Hall, New North Building.

Musics from the Afro Latin Diaspora:  Lecture
Roland Vazquez presented examples — audio and otherwise — of music from Africa, Spain, and the Afro Latin cultures of the western hemisphere. Recipient of an NEA Jazz Performance Grant, Vazquez has also served on faculty at the Manhattan School of Music and the University of Michigan, and has been featured as clinician/performer in residencies at the Eastman School of Music, Berklee School of Music, Ohio University, Montclair State, and University of Cincinnati Conservatory.

Critically acclaimed composer/drummer/clinician Roland Vazquez performed with his Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble as part of the Friday Music Series. Vazquez is a drummer, composer, bandleader & recording artist with more than 40 years of experience. Vazquez started as a drummer with R&B and rock groups in-and-around East L.A., when he began writing for jazz-fusion groups in college. As a core member of the legendary Clare Fischerʼs All-Star band “Salsa Picante” (ʻ78-ʻ81), he played drums on the Grammy Award-winning (Latin Jazz ’82) “Salsa Picante” recording and was featured with Poncho Sanchez, Luis Conte, & Alex Acuna. The Georgetown University Music Program’s Friday Music Series features acclaimed artists in free concerts on Fridays at 1:15 p.m., on Georgetown’s main campus.
