Be prepared with 2-3 songs. You may use the equipment in Studio D for your audition. These auditions are for complete bands. If you wish to get on a wait list, please contact Professor McCarthy.
For Returning Group Members:
Be prepared with two tunes to show progress from last semester.

Please prepare a verse and chorus of a pop or well-known song. We will ask you to do several sing-backs; a series of three notes will be played on the piano and you must repeat them on your own. You will also be asked to sing a round with two group members which will be taught to you beforehand Finally, we will ask you for your recognizable pop song.

See our website (www.georgetowngracenotes.com) to get a sense of the type of songs we sing. You need only attend one of the first two sessions. Please arrive at the start time. We will warm up together and then you will sign up for a time slot to return and audition individually.

New Student Orientation Convocation Choir

Singers do not have to prepare anything although they must arrive with singing voices warmed up and ten minutes early to fill out an information sheet. New NSO Convocation Choir participants are required to audition for the first day of NSO Convocation Choir Rehearsals which this year are on Thursday, August 27th. Upon arrival on campus, new singers should locate the audition sign-up form which will be posted near the FedEx box on the ground floor of New North. Auditions are 10 minutes each and consist of vocalizing and sight-reading. Students who sang in the previous year's NSO Convocation Choir (2008) or who sang in Concert Choir the previous academic year (2008-2009) do not need to re-audition unless they wish to be considered for a different voice part. All other singers must re-audition.

Chamber Music Ensembles

(please note that this date has been changed from the previously scheduled September 9 audition)
The audition is open to pianists, string and wind players, who have studied the instrument previously.
The audition requirements are:
1. Scale in minimum three octaves OR a study ( for string players: the study must demonstrate ability to play in at least four positions);
2. One piece (could be a movement of a sonata, or concerto, or solo work);
3. Auditionees will be asked to sightread (play at sight on their instrument) an example of intermediate level of difficulty.
Audition sign-up sheet will be posted by the door of Studio B New North starting on August 25th until the day of the audition. It will also be posted at the DPA Open House on September 1st. The Chamber Music Ensemble Program offers an intensive combination of coachings, rehearsals and classes during ten weeks of the semester, which culminates with a final public concert. Participation in the program requires regular attendance and high level of commitment. *All returning group members must audition for the Fall 2009 semester. The audition requirements listed above will apply for all returning group members.

If you would like to audition for Jazz Band, Jazz Combos, and Wind Ensemble you only need to audition one time for placement into all groups. To sign up for an audition time please write to Professor Aaron Broadus for available times or you may go to the Department of Performing Arts (DPA) rehearsal space located in New North Building between Dahlgren Chapel and the Davis Performing Arts Center when you arrive on campus. The sign up sheet will be posted outside rehearsal hall Studio A. You may also sign up at the DPA Open House on September 1, 2009 in the Davis Center. No previous jazz experience is necessary.
Preparations are as follows:
Wind Instruments:
Scales (required for entry to all groups):
All wind instruments should be prepared to play Major scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats.
Prepared Piece (for Wind Ensemble & GU Jazz):
Preferred but not required. Students who wish to audition for the GU Wind Ensemble may bring two short pieces in contrasting style. Something you played in high school will be fine. *For GU Jazz auditions, the prepared piece does not need to be in a Jazz style.
Sight Reading (required for entry to all groups):
All students will be given a minimum of two short pieces to sight read.
Rhythm Section/Percussion:
After the first round of auditions there will be callbacks. Students who make callbacks will enter a second round of auditions performing with the full ensemble at the first rehearsal Tuesday September 8, 2009.
Piano/Guitar:
Auditionees are subject to the same audition requirements as wind instruments.
Jazz Drums/Percussionists:
Should be prepared to play multiple styles including Swing, Latin, Rock and Funk.
Wind Ensemble Drums/Percussionists:
Should be ready to perform on all percussion instruments with an emphasis on snare drum, marimba and Timpani. Percussionist should also be prepared to play their major scales (listed above) on Marimba.
