The Gospel At Colonus

Conceived and Adapted by Lee Breuer
Music Composed by Bob Telson
Directed by Isaiah Wooden

The Theater Program at Georgetown University, in collaboration with the Black Theatre Ensemble, opens its season with the widely acclaimed The Gospel At Colonus on October 12th - 14th at 8 PM, October 15th at 2PM and October 18th - 21st at 8PM in The Gonda Theatre of the new Davis Performing Arts Center.

An exciting re-visioning of Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus, The Gospel at Colonus stages a moving sermon on redemption, healing and community. Created 20 years ago by Lee Breuer and Bob Telson, The Gospel at Colonus blends the coolness of the classical Greek source with the energy of American Gospel music. Setting the story in the context of a Pentecostal Service - spirit-filled with preaching, music, and call and response - audience members quickly become participants sharing a holistic experience of catharsis.

An electric show that is part service, part ritual, part theatrical experience, The Gospel at Colonus celebrates African American community from the time of the Middle Passage to today, and is cast here with a multicultural cast of 28. With the oratorical cadence of the griot and the rhythm of the West African drum merging with a revisioning of ancient Greek myth and hymns of praise, The Gospel At Colonus imbues an ancient story with a distinctively African and American spirit.

The first of the four plays in Classics re-Visioned, the Theater Program at Georgetown University's powerful new season, Gospel is the first musical to be staged in the new Gonda Theatre, of the Davis Center. Directed by Isaiah Wooden, Adjunct Professor of Theater and Artistic Adviser for the Black Theater Ensemble, this performance continues the Davis Center's ongoing mission of collaboration within Georgetown's academic community, and beyond.

Tickets can be ordered online or by calling (202) 687-ARTS. Price of admission is $15 (general seating), $12 (faculty and staff) and $7 (students).
