Dance Groups

The Department of Performing Arts sponsors four active dance ensembles. Each group rehearses 2-3 times per week, usually in the evening and/or weekend. Classes typically precede each rehearsal and are run by the Artistic Director or a professional guest artist.

Dance Groups at Georgetown University

Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Georgetown
is in its twelfth year. We have a legacy here at Georgetown as a group of dancers who have embraced the Mexican tradition of folkloric dance from the various Mexican states. Recently, we've added more modern styles to our repertoire, including bachata, salsa and meringue. We perform on and off campus; our dancing takes us all around the DC metro area. We welcome dancers of all backgrounds, and with any level of experience. Come to learn, have fun and build rhythmic skills! Rehearsal days and times: Tuesday and Thursday from 6-9pm in New South Dance Studio B, and Sunday from 7-9 in New South Dance Studio B. For more information, contact Student Director Ann Hiat (ah367@georgetown.edu).

Black Movements Dance Theatre, established in 1981, allows students to perform and choreograph modern, tap, hip-hop, jazz and Afro-jazz. Black Movements involves dancers who reflect the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of the campus, and contributes to the creative expression of African-American and other cultures. Auditions for dancers and choreographers are held each September.

Georgetown Dance Company (GUDC), established in l974, is concert repertory dance company that performs diverse works in classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, indigenous, hip hop and tap. The company has an annual fall and spring season and all choreography is created by the faculty director, student members or professional guest choreographers. Master classes with faculty or with guest professionals are offered occasionally and are open to all students on campus. There is an annual audition held every September.

Ritmo y Sabor Latin Dance (literally "Rhythm and Flavor" in Spanish) was founded in 2002. It is a diverse group of students who wish to promote an awareness of Spanish-speaking Caribbean culture and that of the northernmost countries of South America through dance.  A student-run dance group, auditions are held every fall.

Groove Theory is Georgetown's first and only co-ed hip hop dance group. Ranked Best Performing Arts group for several years by students, Groove Theory performs at on-campus events as well as events and competitions in the DC area. We are committed to contributing to the Georgetown community and raising awareness for a range of issues, including cancer fundraising, LGBTQ awareness, and youth outreach. Groove Theory is more than just a group. It's a way of life. From hip-hop to old school to classical, we get down. Check us out at Midnight Madness, Urban Fare and at a Hoya basketball game near you. One Move, One Groove.
