Theater Degrees & Programs
The Theater Program features courses in creative and academic work, nurturing integrative understanding of identity, culture and the world through theater and performance studies. A small, vital, and fast-growing program, Theater at Georgetown is distinctive for its emphasis on the development of new work, socially-engaged performance, and collaborative research to performance labs. We teach artistic excellence within a liberal arts framework.
More than fifty students currently minor in Theater, while hundreds of students from all schools in the university take our classes (or perform in our season) each year. The Theater Program is poised to offer a major in 2006-07; at this stage, exceptionally motivated, talented students in the College may design interdisciplinary studies majors with Theater at the center. In addition to choosing from among our core, rotating, and special topics courses offered directly by the Theater Program, students who minor in Theater can draw on approved cognate courses in theater, dramatic literature, and performance studies offered by other disciplines, such as English, French, Spanish, Music, Classics, and German.
To fulfill the Theater minor, a student must take six three-unit courses, distributed as described below. Any student seeking credit for dedicated participation in productions, including plays produced by student theater groups (and advised by faculty), should consult with the Program Director early in the process about how to arrange directed studies. Likewise for internships or study abroad.
REQUIREMENTS for the THEATER MINOR include:
-
2 courses from departmental offerings in creative practice (Acting, Directing, Design, Performance Styles, Playwriting, or Technical Theater)
-
2 courses from departmental offerings in scholarly analysis (Theater History, Performance Theory, Dramatic Literature)
-
2 elective courses in any aspect of Theater
Please note that:
-
Not more than 3 acting courses can count toward the minor
- Up to two courses may be fulfilled by courses from outside the Theater Program (transfer credits, exchange credits, or cognate courses), when approved by the Director of the Theater Program. Pre-approval is urged.
