The Theater Program at Georgetown University continues to foster thought provoking, socially-engaged performance with the presentation of Professor Derek Goldman's acclaimed drama, Right As Rain, on January 25th at 8 PM; January 26th at 11 AM & 8 PM and January 27th at 8 PM in the Gonda Theatre of the new Royden B. Davis Performing Arts Center. In this revisioning, the cast of Georgetown students in collaboration with local professional actors, including Sarah Marshall and James Konicek, bring new a subtlety and power to Anne Frank's account of the Holocaust.
Right As Rain was originally commissioned in 1993 by Facing History & Ourselves' Anne Frank In the World exhibit and the Spertus Museum in Chicago. In its first incarnation, the production had a professional run in Chicago and then toured nationally and locally for three years. The play juxtaposes an expressionistic retelling of the Anne Frank story with the trial at Nuremberg of Arthur Seyss-Inquart, the Nazi official most directly responsible for the round-up of Jews in the Netherlands.
"All of us who saw Right As Rain were touched to the core of our souls. I can only hope that more students will have the opportunity to witness this masterpiece." -- Hanna Lubowsky, PhD, Holocaust Survivor and Program Director of Anshe Emet Day School.
Dr. Goldman is the Founding Artistic Director of the StreetSigns Center for Literature and Performance, an award-winning theatre founded in Chicago in 1992 and now based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Among more than fifty productions as a professional director and published adapter/playwright, Goldman has directed Off-Broadway and worked regularly with regional theatres such as Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. His work has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Joseph Jefferson Award, the Spectator Award for Best Director, and many others.
Right As Rain testifies to the Georgetown University Theater Program's vitality and remarkable recent growth. It also honors the new Davis Center's mission to bring outstanding theater to life, including new works, through collaboration with professional artists, educational outreach, and an integration of critical and creative inquiry.
