El Teatro de Danza Contemporanea de El Salvador has gone through major transitions lately. The Institution has changed their name to DC’s El Teatro de Danza Contemporanea (TDC), to reflect an expanded, multicultural vision which now incorporates some of DC’s most outstanding and diverse dance talent while maintaining a commitment to their Latin American roots. It makes perfect sense that after 25 years committed to the promotion of diversity of dance in WDC, and as former Founder/Director of DC Contemporary Dance Theatre, which gave root to much of today’s most outstanding DC dance leadership, that Founder/Artistic Director, Miya Hisaka Silva, has brought together the Latino and African American dance worlds.

TDC was originally established in San Salvador in l994 by Founder/Director Miya Hisaka Silva and Associate Francisco Castillo. TDC is distinctive because it is the first professional company in the history of El Salvador, and because its objectives go beyond performance. TDC originally united artistic leaders from all regions of El Salvador with a common vision for dance, as well as a driving commitment for the re-development of their country after a 12-year civil war. Because of this history, TDC uses dance: to preserve their culture; for self-expression and the restoration of lost history; for healing and the development of human dignity; to maintain an exchange between Central Americans in the USA and their homeland; and to help build values upon which a new US Hispanic society is being built. TDC is committed to a country, to its people and to its unique history with an insistence on artistic excellence.

TDC has come along way from their original roots from El Salvador. Today, TDC’s 10-member Company presents contemporary, classical and indigenous repertory to a diverse audience of 75,000/year with over 38 performances throughout the world. TDC has been presented by The Kennedy Center, The Smithsonian Institution, The UN Commission for Refugees, Dance Place, Tribeca Center/NYC, The Central American Olympics, University of UNAM/Mexico City, Santa Clara, among others. TDC has become internationally recognized for their accessible, powerful, passionate and elegant repertory reflecting a distinctive Central American aesthetic with an expressive and exuberant style. "Infused by the passion of living, the Company gives soulful meaning to the term expression dance." (Washington Post) "With compelling simplicity, freshness, directness in dancing, powerfully in the moment... physically sumptuous..." (New York Times). The Company's repertory reflects through dance the human spirit, with the hopes to inspire in people the ability to dream!
