Dance Groups

The Program in Performing Arts sponsors four active dance ensembles. Each group rehearses 2-3 times per week, usually in the evening and/or weekend. Classes typically precede each rehearsal and are run by the Artistic Director or a professional guest artist.

GUDC

Georgetown Dance Company (GUDC), established in l974, is concert repertory dance company that performs diverse works in classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, indigenous, hip hop and tap. The company has an annual fall and spring season and all choreography is created by the faculty director, student members or professional guest choreographers. Master classes with faculty or with guest professionals are offered occasionally and are open to all students on campus. There is an annual audition held every September. The Black Movements Dance Theatre, established in 1981, allows students to perform and choreograph modern, tap, hip-hop, jazz and Afro-jazz. Black Movements involves dancers who reflect the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of the campus, and contributes to the creative expression of African-American and other cultures. Auditions for dancers and choreographers are held each September. 

 


Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Georgetown was founded in the spring of 1997, and is a dance group that allows Georgetown students to celebrate the folklore and culture of Mexico. This group performs for international events as well as Mexican holidays such as the Mexican Independence Day, and the Cinco de Mayo. Using traditional styled costumes and music, this group revisits the many cultural regions of Mexico and invites all students to share the experience of Mexican folklore. Auditions are held each semester.

 


Georgetown's newest dance group, Ritmo y Sabor Latin Dance (literally "Rhythm and Flavor" in Spanish) was founded in 2002. It is a diverse group of students who wish to promote an awareness of Spanish-speaking Caribbean culture and that of the northernmost countries of South America through dance.  A student-run dance group, auditions are held every fall.
