Maru Montero
Since 1992, Maru Montero has served as the president of the Maru Montero Dance Company, the leading Latin dance company in the Washington, DC, area. Among the venues where the company has performed include the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, the Lincoln Theater, and the Gala Hispanic Theater.
For 15 years, Ms. Montero has acted as the presenter and producer of the National Cinco de Mayo Festival , the largest and most successful Latin festival in Washington, with more than 10,000 people at the Washington Monument.
She has been the recipient of the Mayor's Arts Award, Outstanding Emerging Artists, awards from the Leadership Greater Washington and Artistic and dance grants from DC Commission on the Arts, Maryland State Arts Council, Freddie Mac Foundation.
She serves as Artist-in-residence University of Maryland and has organized, designed and taught dance programs at the Education Department of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts CINARS- International Exchange for the Performing Arts Conference, the Rolling Terrace Elementary, Silver Spring, MD, the Bell Multicultural High School, Washington, DC, and the Carlos Rosario International Career Center, DC Oyster Bilingual School.
Ms. Montero was a principal dancer from 1978-1984 with Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. She has with Amalia Hernandez in Mexican folk, contemporary, ballet, jazz and choreography and has performed in China, Europe, United States with Mexico's leading dance company.
